Takeoff was born in Lawrenceville, a municipality in the U.S. state of Georgia’s Gwinnett County. Takeoff was raised by his mother, Quavo, and Offset in Lawrenceville, Georgia, in the United States. Takeoff started rapping in 2008, along with his family members Quavo and Offset. Polo Club was the group’s original stage name, but they eventually switched to Migos. On August 25, 2011, the group made available their debut full-length project, a mixtape called Juug Season. On June 1, 2012, they came out with the mixtape No Label.

Migos’ first number-one single, “Bad and Boujee” featuring Lil Uzi Vert, peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 during the week of January 21, 2017. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the song four times platinum (RIAA). Takeoff appears in one of the music video’s background scenes, but he is not featured or credited to the song. Takeoff has stated that he was not featured in the song because he was too busy at the time of recording. On June 24, 2017, during the filming of Complex’s Everyday Struggle at the BET Awards 2017, he was asked about his absence by hosts Joe Budden and DJ Akademiks, to which he replied, “Does it look like I’m left off “Bad and Boujee”?” Takeoff’s response caused Budden to leave the set, and an altercation between Migos and Budden and their entourages nearly occurred before it was broken up by security.
